On April 14, 1935, temperatures dropped fifty degrees and sixty-five-miles-an-hour winds lifted arid and barren soil from Wyoming and the Dakotas, and then continued its destructive southern course to displace tons of dirt throughout much of the American Plains. Better known as Black Sunday, this storm has been earmarked as the worst of the Dirty Thirties, a decade of dust storms in the 1930s. During this time period, there were almost 200 dust storms that plagued this region. The main concentration of these storms settled in a rough circle of land, known as the Dust Bowl, which consisted of sections of New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. However out of all these storms, none had produced such vast physical and environmental damage like Black Sunday, and it took this storm to send a wake up call to the U.S. government.
To understand how and why these dust storms evolved, Brown takes readers back millions of years from the geological developments of the Rocky Mountain range and the American Plains and what the land was like when Native Americans freely roamed the continent, to Brown’s uncomplicated explanation of the adverse effects U.S. history had on the growth and progress of agriculture. By the time drought inundated the American Plains in 1931, particularly the Dust Bowl region, Brown aptly states that, “the drought tortured the land, evaporating the moisture in the soil…when the wind blew, dust storms followed.” These dust storms led to harsh temperatures and the encroachment of bugs and jackrabbits.
On May 9, 1934, winds whipped up again, and this time from Montana and the Dakotas, taking with it 350 million tons of dirt, which created gritty clouds that reached fifteen thousand feet.

In the President’s Secret Service PDF Free Download

In the President’s Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Ronald Kessler ID: B002LZ95RQ

Secret Service agents, acting as human surveillance cameras, observe everything that goes on behind the scenes in the president’s inner circle. Ronald Kessler reveals what they have seen, providing startling, previously untold stories about the presidents, from John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush and Barack Obama, as well as about their families, Cabinet officers, and White House aides. Kessler portrays the dangers that agents face and how they carry out their missions—from how they are trained to how they spot and assess potential threats. With fly-on-the-wall perspective, he captures the drama and tension that characterize agents’ lives. In this headline-grabbing book, Kessler discloses assassination attempts that have never before been revealed. He shares inside accounts of past assaults that have put the Secret Service to the test, including a heroic gun battle that took down the would-be assassins of Harry S. Truman, the devastating day that John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas, and the swift actions that saved Ronald Reagan after he was shot. While Secret Service agents are brave and dedicated, Kessler exposes how Secret Service management in recent years has betrayed its mission by cutting corners, risking the assassination of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and their families. Given the lax standards, “It’s a miracle we have not had a successful assassination,” a current agent says. ,p>Since an assassination jeopardizes democracy itself, few agencies are as important as the Secret Service—and few subjects are as tantalizing as the inner sanctum of the White House. Only tight-lipped Secret Service agents know the real story, and Kessler is the only journalist to have won their trust.

Today the Secret Service is in charge of protecting the President… the Vice-President… former President’s… world leaders… big events… and even the Pope. Things have come a long way since April 14, 1865 when President Lincoln’s bodyguard on duty outside the president’s box at Ford’s Theatre "was Patrolman John F. Parker of the Washington police. Instead of remaining on guard outside the President’s box, Parker wandered off to watch the play, then went to a nearby saloon for a drink". And of course John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln that night. Author Ronald Kessler then leads the reader not only through the growth… both in size… and responsibility… of the United States Secret Service… but he also brings to light… almost limitless Presidential peccadilloes… character traits… and faults… that are almost beyond an average citizens imagination. The revelations in this book go way… way… past the JFK-Marilyn Monroe sexual liaisons… which is almost accepted common knowledge by multiple generations. We’re talking about JFK bedding multiple women at the same time… with the security of a Secret Service team with Jackie… giving alerts to JFK if she was on the way back… while he was in the pool with two buxom women wearing nothing but wet T-shirts. We’re talking about Lyndon Johnson having multiple sex partners… and even being caught in the act on the couch by Lady Bird Johnson… thus leading an irate LBJ to request a red warning light in his office and other areas that could be activated by agents to alert him when Lady Bird was on the way. LBJ would even have women on his ranch while Lady Bird was home… and simply get up at night and go into a different room for sex.
"In the President’s Secret Service" is something of a guilty pleasure for those interested in learning more about our nation’s presidents and first families and those agents who protect them. Yet it also pays tribute to those agents who put their lives on the line every day for their charges, and also seeks to highlight deficiencies in the agency that desperately need to be addressed. Kessler interviewed a number of active and retired agents in order to describe the dangers the agents and their charges face from a myriad of threats and seeks to personalize the history of this agency that often serves in the shadows and in silence for very obvious reasons. In an age when citizens are critical of the government and it’s agencies it is refreshing to read about these genuinely selfless individuals who are literally willing to take a bullet in their line of duty.

Secret Service agents are a favorite topic for fiction and for Hollywood, but their portrayal there is often stilted and two dimensional rather than the nuanced portrait Kessler reveals. Agents endure considerable abuse and difficulty with supreme diffidence and their demonstration of duty, honor, and valor that emerges is very much what you would find in the Armed Forces. Along the way Kessler gives readers a healthy amount of anecdotes about Presidents and their families and how they interacted with the agents assigned to protect them. These stories are by turns funny, interesting, and sometimes downright disturbing. Rather than being a distraction from the more serious messages of the book they help to provide levity when needed. Many of these stories give readers greater insight into the agents and their charges, particular how those protected react to having someone shadow their every move.
IN THE PRESIDENT’S SECRET SERVICE
Four and a half INFORMATIVE Stars!! Loaded with historical data and trivia that is very informative and in some cases very personal, Ronald Kessler’s book ultimately delivers an overview of the history of the Secret Service from early presidential administrations right up to the 21st Century status of the Secret Service that is somewhat troubling. Beyond that we get tidbits of confirming gossip on people such as JFK, LBJ, Spiro Agnew, and others that are extremely unflattering. There is more on recent and current presidents, families, and staff that will titillate those who want inside stories, however brief. There are some stories that are also ‘laugh-out-loud’ funny.

The author says early ‘pre-Secret Service’ attitudes toward presidential protection probably got 3 presidents shot before the era of heavy protection arrived. Heavy presidential protection was added almost as an "after thought" to crime-busting duties of the Secret Service following those 3 incidents. Then came the advent of expansions and refinements such as the White House Police. We even get a look into their secretive headquarters. The author covers a number of revelations such as: the "biggest gunfight in Secret Service history"; Nixon’s unusual private life; more disturbing information on what happened before, during, and after the JFK assassination; the "Fiddle & Faddle" threesome mistresses; the midnight peacock; secret amphibious vehicles; LBJ’s unbelievable antics; Carter’s quirks, and so on, right up to the Obama administration which the author says is more of a challenge than the others for one particular somber reason.

Survival Guide for Coaching Youth Basketball Kindle Edition PDF

Survival Guide for Coaching Youth Basketball Kindle Edition
Author: Greg Kot ID: B001FA0Q3A

File Size: 5740 KBPrint Length: 184 pagesPublication Date: November 14, 2008 Sold by:  Digital Services, Inc. Language: EnglishID: B001FA0Q3AText-to-Speech: Enabled X-Ray: Not Enabled Word Wise: Not EnabledLending: Enabled Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled Best Sellers Rank: #65,218 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store) #5 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Nonfiction > Sports > Coaching > Basketball #5 in Books > Sports & Outdoors > Coaching > Children’s Sports #14 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Nonfiction > Sports > Basketball

As a parent who has a couple of kids playing youth and high school basketball, I have found the Survival Guide for Youth Basketball both a quick and informative read on the fundamentals for coaching kids. It is a great source of information and philosophy that coaches and prospective coaches can/should use to help with the coaching of young players.

One of the best qualities of this book is its ability to explain the rational of the various drills and suggested practice routines. Coaches can use these to help explain to young players (and their parents) the necessity of learning the fundamentals before going on to the more advanced aspects of the game. This is especially useful as most young players want to focus on their scoring and shooting, at the expense of good ball handling and defensive skills.

The book has numerous drills, practice routines, and schedules that can be easily understood and incorporated by both novice and experienced youth basketball coaches. The diagrams also really help illustrate the points that the authors are trying to make.

Some of the other neat aspects about the book include:

* The "Coach’s Clipboard", which summarizes and helps to reinforce the key points of each chapter in the book

* The "Drill Finder" matrix, which allows the coach to easily find the specific drill(s) needed to help develop specific basketball skills

* Offensive and defensive plays and sets that can be used and understood by beginning players

The single best attribute of this book is that it provides a proven roadmap to all those parents who are getting ready to jump into a coaching role. It is a quick an informative read, and will be used by coaches as their primary reference guide for instructing young kids.

I highly recommend The Survival Guide to Coaching Youth Basketball to new and experienced youth (grade 3-8) basketball coaches trying to get ready for the upcoming season. As a youth basketball coach for the past six years I always find the two weeks before the season to be the most stressful time of the year.

As most of us juggle work, family and coaching we can feel overwhelmed and unorganized for the upcoming season. The Survival Guide for Coaching Youth Basketball is the first book I have read that gets right to the point – how do I get my young kids ready for the basketball season quickly and effectively?

If you are a new coach with little personal playing experience or a veteran coach looking for a way to recapture that teaching ‘magic’ this book is worth reading. Greg Kot and Keith Miniscalco have written their book in an easy to understand and well organized manner. They do not get overly technical nor do they insult your basketball intelligence.

Buy the book, take a few hours on a Sunday (after football of course) with notepad and pen and you will be better prepared for the season.

We have two boys that are playing basketball (grades 7 and 3)and this book really helped us understand the basic skills. Both offensive and defensive skills are shown clearly. If you are a parent thinking about coaching youth basketball this is the book for you! If you are just a parent that wants to understand grade school basketball this is the book for you too! After getting this book we now know what is happening on the court when our boys play, and it makes the game so much more enjoyable. The coaches like that we understand the game better and are not "coaching" from the bleachers too! Buy this book if you are at all interested in youth basketball…you will not be sorry that you did.

Dungeon Master’s Guide – December 9, 2014 PDF

Dungeon Master’s Guide (D&D Core Rulebook) Hardcover – December 9, 2014
Author: Visit ‘s Wizards RPG Team Page ID: 0786965622

Series: D&D Core RulebookHardcover: 320 pagesPublisher: Wizards of the Coast (December 9, 2014)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0786965622ISBN-13: 978-0786965625 Product Dimensions: 8.6 x 0.8 x 11.2 inches Shipping Weight: 2.4 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #386 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #3 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Gaming > Dungeons & Dragons #71 in Books > Teens
Over the years, none of the Dungeons and Dragons manuals has changed as much as the Dungeon Master’s Guide. It began as a tome of potent secrets, to be jealously guarded from the feckless eyes of mere players. Were a DM so inclined, he or she could prevent the players from even knowing how their to-hit rolls matched up against armor class to establish the results of a sword-blow or bowshot. Experience point values for monsters, the effects of magic items, even simple rules for movement remained the purview of the game-master.

As the game grew, and more and more options arose for building characters, the basics of play moved into the Player’s Handbook, and the DMG relinquished XP values to the Monster Manual and most of the combat rules to the PHB. In the process, it morphed into a nuts-and-bolts toolbox, starting off with rules on combat management, followed by practical sections covering environmental hazards, towns and villages, NPC generation, NPC character classes, and so on. In both 3E and 4E, it opened with a narrow focus and gradually got wider and wider in scope, with the culminative chapters advising the DM on how to run a campaign and build a world.

The new edition does exactly the opposite, and therein lies its genius.

If there’s one thing that D&D is always about, it’s the experience of stepping out of this world and into another. The fifth edition DMG establishes how important that notion is by putting the world- and cosmos-building chapters up front. Creating a fantastical environment for players to adventure in and journey through is no longer something you eventually get around to by the end of the book; it’s front-and-center as the DM’s first responsibility.
What can I say? This book rounds out the Holy Trinity ™ of D&D 5th edition. With this book the DM or Dungeon Master, has everything she needs to tell the stories that the PC’s or Player Characters, need to bring this game to life. I predict that this book, and the entire run of 5th edition, will be winning major awards, and this book firmly establishes D&D as a relevant Role Playing Game brand again after the unfortunate disaster that was 4th edition. In summary, the art in this book is fantastic, starting with the great cover. This is the DMG that is everything I’ve come to expect in a 5e rule book. Following the exceptional job done in the PHB and Monster Manual, I expected nothing less. The full splash color pages are evocative and stunning, and really give you a sense of what D&D is all about. The fantasy worlds and creatures come to life on every page. Everything is fresh, new, and original, and this book rounds out the 3 books that encompass Dungeons and Dragons. My nod to Pathfinder (or as its referred to D&D 3.75): peruse this book and be prepared to return to the loving arms of D&D again…

Now, lets get down to business: To say there are a lot of table in the 5e DMG is an understatement. This book is packed full of tables. Every section has tables to help the DM use the mechanics quickly and easily. All the tables reminded me of the original 1e DMG, whihc was a good thing. Here is the breakdown:

Chapter 1: A World of Your Own
Whether you’re a new DM who’s never played before or you’re a player who hasn’t played in a very long time then this chapter provides a great introduction to world-building. If you’re an experienced DM and you’ve played any previous edition of D&D in the last few years you can quickly peruse this section.
D&D has a long-standing tradition of putting out mediocre DMG’s. My favorite example is 2nd edition’s "Read through information that was basically copied out of the Player’s Handbook, then only refer to this when you need one of the handful of tables unique to this book." 5e’s DMG is a trend breaker, and is probably the best one they’ve put out to date.

If you’re a new DM entirely –

This book is perfect for you. You may not agree with everything in it, but it’s filled to the brim with advice on how to not only run the game, but also develop a world, build characters, create maps, handle currency, design deities, so on and so on. It has considerations for the different kinds of ways groups like to play the game (the hack and slash group vs. the roleplay group), and suggestions on how to cater to what your group of players may want to see. Most importantly, it emphasizes that your primary objective is having fun. It actively encourages you to change/break rules if you don’t think you or your players will enjoy it, and has plenty of variant rules available in case you’re not keen on making your own changes.

For actually running the game, it elaborates on a lot of systems skimmed over in the Player’s Handbook. It adds new rules you may find to your liking. It gives you a handy system for balancing encounters to make sure you don’t accidentally kill your entire party 30 minutes in. Basically everything you could conceive happening in your early sessions is probably covered at some point in the book. It not only explains what to do in X situation, but also covers reasons why X situation might come up in the first place. The whole book is clearly written not only to tell you what to do, but also to help you get into the habit of thinking like a DM.

What to Expect the Second Year PDF Free Download

What to Expect the Second Year: From 12 to 24 Months (What to Expect (Workman Publishing)) Hardcover – April 5, 2011
Author: Visit ‘s Heidi Murkoff Page ID: 0761163646

From Publishers Weekly

Popular parenting guru Murkoff offers a sequel to her What to Expect in the First Year in this all-inclusive look at the toddler from 12 to 24 months. In 15 chapters the authors cover feeding, sleeping, learning, playing, health and safety, injuries and developmental disorders, discipline, and other issues with a meaty center section on behavior. The text opens with the stunning array of developmental milestones that characterize this action-packed period in a child’s life, beginning at 12 to 13 months, when a toddler says two words and cruises from place to place while holding on to furniture, to 24 months when he or she can run, kick a ball, and use 50 words or more. While noting that there’s a “wide range of normal,” Murkoff also warns parents to “follow your gut” and check with your pediatrician if anything seems behind schedule. Murkoff covers practical matters like the importance of parents learning CPR, frequently citing professional guidelines (i.e., experts advise no TV for kids under two). She also addresses less critical topics, such as how to get a blob of oatmeal out of a toddler’s hair or deal with a youngster’s “wardrobe monotony.” Just as expected, Murkoff offers sound advice and reassurance that will help parent and toddler stay grounded during this whirlwind period of growth and change. About the Author

It all started with a baby…and a book. Heidi Murkoff conceived the idea for What to Expect When You're Expecting during her first pregnancy, when she couldn’t find answers to her questions or reassurance for her worries in the books she’d turned to for much-needed advice. Determined to write a guide that would help other expectant parents sleep better at night, Heidi delivered the proposal for What to Expect When You’re Expecting just hours before delivering her daughter, Emma.

Dubbed the “pregnancy bible”, the iconic New York Times bestseller is now in its all-new fourth edition, with over 18.5 million copies in print, and according to USA Today, is read by 93 percent of women who read a pregnancy book. Other titles in the series include Eating Well When You’re Expecting, What to Expect the First Year, What to Expect Before You’re Expecting (a complete preconception plan), and the newest member of the What to Expect family: What to Expect the Second Year, the must-have guide for parents of toddlers. The What to Expect books have sold more than 34 million copies in the US alone, and are published in over 30 languages.

In 2005, Heidi expanded the What to Expect (WTE) brand online with WhatToExpect.com – the interactive, state-of-the-internet companion to the WTE books, and home to a vibrant, vast, yet close-knit community of 3 million parents. In 2009, WTE went mobile with the WTE Pregnancy Tracker (the most popular pregnancy app in the world), the WTE Fertility Tracker, the WTE Baby Name Finder, and the WTE First Year Tracker.
Heidi’s passionate commitment to moms and babies led to the creation of the What to Expect Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underserved families expect healthy pregnancies, safe deliveries, and healthy, happy babies. With a beautiful, culturally appropriate low-literac

This book is very informative, however that chapters are not designated by age (month). In this book they are by categories. The information is great, but I miss reading about each month’s development, etc.

When I became a mom for the first time I can remember being glued to What to Expect the First Year (What to Expect (Workman Publishing)). In fact I have had the same copy of this book for more than seven years now and find myself peeking at it every now and then too look for advise as my children went on in life. Now I am thrilled at the release of What to Expect the Second Year: From 12 to 24 Months (What to Expect (Workman Publishing)). Maybe this is because of my Elliot just turning one a few days ago and maybe it is because finally my needs for information as they age have been meet by author Heidi Murkoff.

One of my biggest issues that began when my son made the transition from bottle to solids was his eating habits. For the first week it was all eggs, cheerios and applesauce it seemed. It was then and even now very picky and left much on his plate ever meal. In a chapter I learned how to add a sippy cup and some self feeding tips that have helped us get over the dietary issues and on to a well feed little man again.

I have learned how to handle early temper tantrums with grace and compassion and found tips on safety proofing that even this momma of many would have overlooked. Most importantly I have found ways to encourage positive behaviors and ways to mold a growing mind.

I have not read this book completely as of today but use it regularly with my many questions (thank goodness for the index). I am sure given another month I will have touched on every subject What to Expect the Second Year contains. I welcome it with open arms and even carry this with me wherever we go.

Let me say this first – I am a huge fan of What to Expect When You’re Expecting and WTE First Year books. I have told dozens of people they should purchase them so I was really excited to get this for my son’s newest year. With the other two, there literally was never a topic I wanted to know about that wasn’t discussed. Not the case with Second Year.

Other than skimming the pages and reading general Second Year info, I have gone to this book three times for specific questions regarding my son. All three were big strike-outs. In case you were wondering the three issues were hand, foot and mouth disease, impact of death of a close family member, and excessive drooling with no other medical problem.

All in all, this book has lots of great information and is probably worth buying. Just don’t expect it to be a go-to book as in-depth and comprehensive as the earlier books. Who knows – maybe we are just a bit too far from norm!

I Am Spock Paperback – June 23, 2015
Author: Leonard Nimoy ID: 0316388378

About the Author

An internationally known stage, film and television actor, Leonard Nimoy directed several major motion pictures, including The Good Mother, Three Men and a Baby, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Best remembered for his role as Mr. Spock of the Star Trek series, Nimoy is also the author of I Am Not Spock.

Paperback: 352 pagesPublisher: Hachette Books; Reprint edition (June 23, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0316388378ISBN-13: 978-0316388375 Product Dimensions: 6 x 1 x 9 inches Shipping Weight: 12.8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #50,059 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #46 in Books > Biographies & Memoirs > Historical > Europe > Russia #97 in Books > History > Asia > Russia #589 in Books > Biographies & Memoirs > Arts & Literature > Actors & Entertainers

It made me very sad to read this book because of the passing of one of my heroes growing up, but it was a great and wonderful book. Reading about the man who made Spock was very wonderful and just so sad :(

I love reading memoirs about my favorite actors and actresses. Finding out all of these little tidbits that you never knew about them.

The ongoing dialog between Spock and Leonard throughout the book is classic. He would have these conversations between him and Spock. They were quite comical and I enjoyed them immensely.

Leonard Nimoy was a man of many talents. He not only starred in a lot of films and plays, he was a great director.

I think anyone that loves the Star Trek franchise, especially Spock, will love this book. I highly recommend!

Lived Long and Prospered!!!!!

RIP ~ Leonard Nimoy

MY REVIEWS:
http://ift.tt/1rPUEK3
http://ift.tt/1TWbaB9

I laughed and cried and oh man, it was a fast, fun read because I wanted to know every little thing. I am sad that the book ended and sad that he cannot continue with another book (but his son is continuing his legacy with a movie). This book is for every fan of Star Trek, every writer or creative person to see what goes on behind the scenes in creating a project, and anyone wanting to know the trials and "tribble" -ations of one man’s rather humble life. What a creative genius in his own right with is photography and poetry and such. A definite must read.

I have purchased this book and found it very interesting by what it said and by what was not said. I enjoyed Spock and found a copy of "I am not Spock" at the library to read. This book borrows a lot from the first, from anecdotes to ideas expressed.
Since I had no idea of Leonard’s other works I have now watched some of the movies he has been in and read some of his poems. I will miss Spock and Leonard. Rest in Peace.

As a fruit and cheese lover I am in love with this Mediterranean diet! This book has a great 7 day meal plan that is easy to follow and features some great meals. The author has provided a breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner meal plan to help you lose weight while improving your health. The author also provides a list of substitute ingredients, which I loved and found very beneficial.

This book really does give you all the necessary information you needed to understand how to successfully apply the Mediterranean diet to your life. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Mediterranean diet and looking to try out some great tasting recipes.

This book is a well-written, comprehensive overview of the Mediterranean diet. The history of this style of eating is covered, including the pleasure of taking the time to enjoy a meal with others, and the science behind it. The wide variety of foods that are “allowed” is great. I’m so glad to hear healthy eating is possible while still including moderate amounts of cheese, pasta and bread in your diet. I also really appreciated all the suggestion to flavor foods with traditional herbs and spices instead of so much salt.

There are lots of good information in this book. I didn’t know anything and I learned some good ideas from this book. The recipes are interesting. Looks simple enough. This is a good introductory book.
