I have to say that this is likely the weirdest bed-time reading I have ever done, and furthermore have to take issue with providing a star rating which says that I like or love it 😉 It is, however, an important historical document and part of our legacy. Douglas Brinkley and Luke Nichter have performed a great service by transcribing, editing and sometimes making intelligible Nixon’s secret tapes. This installment brings us to the Watergate era, the time after the break in was revealed. It captures a critical time during the Nixon presidency and provides insights beyond what was revealed in headlined stories at the time (though I was too young to read or make much sense of the then).

I have to confess to not making it all the way through the nearly 900 pages of transcript, but did find much that was simultaneously revealing and disturbing both in terms of content, and Nixon’s thought process.

While I can hardly describe this as enjoyable (or light) reading, it is significant and a unique, singular primary source. Never before, and likely never again will this type of material be available. You can, of course, go to the Nixon library and review unedited transcripts, listen to the tapes, but when you consider that the edited version is 900 pages, you might believe as I do that these two men have done us a great service by providing highlights, context, commentary.

My 4 star rating is not really accurate. It reflects my inability to enjoy such material. As a historical referent I really should give it five stars, but given that the author/ protagonist is Richard Nixon, have a difficult time endorsing the statement "I love it". 😉 . Few will find this enjoyable reading, but it is impossible to deny it’s importance or consequence.
